A little help from my friends

I had yet another sort of my yarn stash this weekend, thanks to some new storage donated by a friend of mine.

This sort out was much more thorough than the last one and I’ve ended up with a bag of teeny tiny scraps and leftovers. It’s great having them all neat(ish) in one place, but I have absolutely no idea what to do with them.

So I’m appealing to my bloggy friends for some ideas. Do you know of anything I can do with all these odds and ends? It can be crochet or knitting (bearing in mind I’m a new knitter), useful or decorative or downright daft – I just want to get them used up!

Please, please, please pass on your wisdom, my crafty friends. If you can drop suggestions into the comments I will be eternally grateful. Thank you in advance!

  5. Echoing the great ideas above – pom poms would be a fun project (perhaps strung together for a hangable garland or decoration?), a scrappy blanket, or maybe little crochet flowers and such? (for jewelry, pins, or teeny tiny crochet plants…). Another idea would be to ‘yarn bomb’ something (a piece of furniture, a bicycle, something else?). Looking forward to reading what you decide to do with the scraps, Hannah!

  6. I like the idea of pom poms or little crochet flowers that you could use to decorate other projects. You could mix colours in each pom pom too. Also there are cute patterns for little crocheted butterflies out there… They would work with scraps.
    Otherwise just start a very stripey, multicoloured scarf!

  9. You could check the cosy memory blanket pattern, it’s great for using little scraps if you have approximately the same weight of yarn and it’s perfect for beginner knitters.

      1. Yes that’s the one! it’s actually super easy, I was a bit worried too at the beginning. Pretty much you knit straight on the reverse and you just have to make 2 decreases in the middle on the front side and it magically makes a mitred square.

  11. They are very colourful. You could use the scraps to make little daisys and such. Add a button and a florest wire and you could turn them into a bouquet. Or you could make a rainbow of hearts and turn it into a decorative garland 🙂

  13. If you have cats or dogs or know people with pets you could make cowls. I have made several for my cat, Sully and my daughter’s two cats and her dog. They are basically infinity scarves for pets. You just make them big enough to fit over the pets head to fit around the neck loosely but not so long they trip over it or it snags on something. I don’t recommend them for pets that go outside to roam unsupervised.   15. I like many of the ideas already presented. I’ve used my scraps to let the little kids practice their yarn with no fear of it getting all tangled up or worries when I notice they’re just chopping it up with scissors. I also use it as doll hair. If I have enough of one color I’ll use that or I’ll mix a couple of colors. I’ve even done rainbow heads. The scraps are also great for small purses, scarves, underwear, headbands and other such accessories for my dolls. Yarn scraps are perfect for that.
