2017 makes

I have no new FOs to share this week – still plugging away at my swirl hat. So instead I thought I’d jump on the bandwagon and have a look at all my FOs from 2017.

I’m so, so glad I have this blog to look back on because my memory is not that great, if you’d asked me to guess I would have said maybe 30-40 yarny items and 20 cards. Want to know what I actually made?

1 bikini top

1 cushion cover

1 custom doily

2 cowls

2 pairs of fingerless gloves

3 phone/kindle cosies

3 coasters

3 pairs of baby bootees

6 blankets/lovies

6 daisies for Vicky

7 hearts for Manchester

8 shawls/scarves

8 octopoms

9 non-octo amigurumis

That’s (if my maths is working today) 87 knit and crochet goodies in a year! 87!!

I mean, some of them were teeny snowflakes that only needed 15 minutes max, but there was also my friend’s mahoosive flat warming blanket, which took me two weeks of non-stop crocheting.

It’s been really tricky choosing my favourite makes of the year. There are so many different types and I’m proud of them all for different reasons.

The flat warming blanket is definitely up there. I finished faster than I expected, it was huge, the colours suited my friend’s flat, and it just so happened to fit perfectly on the back of his sofa.

I loved the Daisies for Vicky and hearts4MCR, because they helped other people and that’s important to me.

The Seafoam scarves make me inordinately proud. My first knitting that wasn’t just garter stitch, plus they’re beautiful.

Also my hats in the round, which was a new technique for me.

I’m also proud of the couple of items I made without following a pattern, and the fact that Dad looked at my amigurumi pokemon and nearly asked me where I bought them from.

Basically, it’s been a good year!  I can’t wait to see what makes 2018 will bring.

Have you reviewed your 2017 makes? I bet it surprised you too. Do you have a favourite (yours or mine)? Let me know in the comments!

My hooks and needles have been busy busy this week! There will be quite a few things to post about on Friday.

I finally made friends with my circular needles and I’ve managed to make 2 very basic hats.

Because they’re mostly just knit stitch round and round, they’re pretty quick to make (once I’ve finished frogging my cast on 6 times) so they’re definitely viable shop products.

My Apple Orchard yarn arrived yesterday so I’ve cast on another hat using that; I want to see how it compares to my crochet version and which I prefer.

I also ordered some more Landscape in the colour Boardwalk, which is definitely battling with Apple Orchard for the title of favourite yarn. It’s the one I used for that hat up there in the photo, and with what’s left I’m making a baby hat.

Crochet-wise, after getting really quite far with my santa hat I decided it looked too pixie-like and frogged the lot. Now I’m trying again with slightly more increase per round and I think it looks much better.

It’s taking forever at this stage, but I know once I get a pattern I’m happy with I can knock them out in an hour or two and be done.

So that’s what I’m working on this week! What’s everyone else working on? Discovered any fabby new yarn? Let me know in the comments!

I have another commission! Mum has asked me to make a captain America shield cushion for a present.

I’m having fun with it. And by fun I mean I’m now working on two versions simultaneously in the hope that one of them will work, and both of them have been frogged at least three times each. That kind of fun.

Looking like the start of a terribly American bikini

But that’s what happens when you refuse to look for a pattern because after 3-4 years of crocheting you should be able to do it yourself by now. Stubborn? Me? Yes.

I also got a big delivery of Christmas-coloured yarns so I’ve made a start on my very first santa hat.

I started at the point, so there were a few immature posts on Instagram

NOT a willy warmer

But now I’m getting underway it’s starting to look much more hat-like.

Again, no pattern for this one but so far I haven’t had to frog any of it!

If you follow me on Instagram, you might remember I started my first ever project on circular knitting needles. It was really fun, I like using the shorter needles, and it was going really well. I got this far:

before realising that nobody actually has a head that big. How big? I was supposed to cast on 50 stitches and I somehow managed to cast on 70.

So that was frogged right back (I only cried a little bit) and I started again, but somehow forgot that I had switched to a smaller needle size. I got three rounds in before noticing that it would’ve been a tight fit for a baby. More frogging.

So I’m taking a break from that right now! Maybe I’ll go back when I’ve finally sorted Captain America’s shield, but we shall see.

So that’s what I’ve been doing this week. What’s everyone else working on? Got something fun to share? Let me know in the comments!
