I have another finish WOO HOOOO!

This poncho has taken me far too long, but it’s done now and looking pretty good if I do say so myself.

It just needs a quick wash to soften it up and then I can hand it over on Monday.

A question for everyone: what would you charge for this? The yarn is all acrylic that I had hanging around in my stash, and I spent about 4-5 hours (ish) making it. My initial thought was £30, but is that too much? Not enough? Let me know what you think!

How has it been a week already? Time is flying by as things are so busy.

I finally managed to catch up with the Changing Tides CAL and it’s such a relief.

I know it’s just for fun, and the blanket is for me so there’s nobody counting on it being finished for a certain deadline, but falling behind was stressing me out. Now it’s like a weight has gone off my shoulders. I will try not to let it happen again.

The tooth now has most of its roots. One good session and I reckon I can finish it.

The poncho is also nearing completion, although the sparkly white yarn ran out so I had to improvise with some plain white. This just needs a border and a tie to close the neck up when baby is wearing it.

And that’s been my week. Not too shabby!

Look at that WIP count creeping up and hoping nobody will notice. I see you.

This weekend did involve a bucketload of crochet, as I’d hoped it would, so I have quite a bit to talk about today.

I’ve done another round on Morag, and I can already tell she’s going to take me a while.

It’s partly that loop stitches take so much longer than plain sc, and partly that I’m having to think so hard about where the increases go and where the loops go, without losing count of my stitches or round number. My poor brain!

The Changing Tides blanket finally got some attention and I’m on to the next section, although that still leaves me almost four weeks behind.

On the way to Toft HQ (three hours of train and two hours of car) I worked on the poncho, so despite having to frog and re-do around 25 rows I made some serious progress.

20190522_174313-1.jpg

It could have been finished by now, except I’m an amateur and didn’t take enough yarn with me.

Luckily my mum also has a stash of yarn so I was able to start an amigurumi she asked me for a couple of months ago:

Yep, it’s a tooth. Mum wants to give it to her dentist so it kind of makes sense.

And finally, thanks to some particularly good sessions with my choir, I’m now about halfway through the ribbing at the bottom of my Flax Light.

2×2 ribbing is soooo much better, so thanks everyone who told me to go for it.

Well, what a difference to the last few weeks! I must say I feel so much better in myself after all this yarny work; I really need to start making time for it every day, even when I’m busy.

What’s everyone else working on?

I never posted about the second baby blanket my mum commissioned, so here we go. It’s another Irish Wave blanket, this time using Sirdar Snuggly Baby Crofter DK in the colourway Hazel. I followed the pattern right up to the end, when the amount of yarn leftover was just the wrong side of useless. I added two rows of sc and that used up every last scrap.

20190323_162815-1.jpg

It came out a bit of an interesting shape, but by the time I realised it wouldn’t be the normal rectangular shape I didn’t have enough time to start again with a shorter chain. Next time I just need to remember what a yarn-muncher it is!

There probably will be a next time, as I love the shapes and it seems to work with all kinds of yarn.

Plus here’s another photo of the lego blanket, because I’m just so proud of it!

Now I’m going to enjoy a weekend of working on every single WIP I have, just because I can! What’s everyone else up to this weekend? Let me know in the comments!

It’s all gone a bit mad this week. My mum asked for 2 baby blankets to give to friends, which I thought I had in stock but didn’t. So I’m rushing those through.

12mm hook ftw!

Then my dad’s birthday is in March and he’s getting a blanket as well. It occurred to me at the weekend that a dad-sized blanket can take quite a bit of time so I’d better get on with it.

Just a sneaky peek for now

I do have a backup plan if it’s not ready in time, but I’m trying my best to hit the deadline.

And the woman at choir who requested a poncho for her granddaughter told me the parents were so pleased with it they’d like another one! There are a few adjustments I can make, which is why I’ve jumped right in to start working them out. I’m expecting much frogging.

With all these new WIPs you’d think everything else would have been neglected, but I actually have progress to show.

Roses for Grandma now has 2 more complete squares and another partly done.

Plus I’m well into the increase section of my Flax Light.

It was so lovely having a whole day at the weekend to just sit and work with yarn, and having so much to show for it feels awesome. But argh so many WIPs!!

What’s everyone else working on this week? Are you keeping your WIP pile under control? Let me know in the comments!

A thought occurs (don’t worry, I’m sitting down) – I don’t think I showed you the finished doily I was working on, did I?

Here you go!

This was a commission from a friend at choir who saw me crocheting my star blanket during rehearsals. He asked for something similar to go on his television unit, gave me some vague ideas about colours, and let me get on with in my own time.

The one issue I had is that his TV unit is rectangular, and he didn’t want the doily hanging over the edges, so a circular star blanket pattern wasn’t going to work. I did have a faff around with Google trying to find some patterns for oval doilies, but it only seemed to give me charts (which I couldn’t read at the time) or photos.

So instead I took the star blanket pattern and tweaked it a bit.

It kind of worked, but in hindsight I should have gone even further and made the beginning longer and thinner. I had to do some wizardry with singles and trebles towards the end because I realised if I kept going with double crochet all round, it would have been too long.

I sent him a photo and told him the price and he was happy with both, hooray! So now all that’s left to do is hand it over and get the money. My favourite part 😉

How’s everyone’s week been? Got any FOs to share? Let me know in the comments!

I have another commission! Mum has asked me to make a captain America shield cushion for a present.

I’m having fun with it. And by fun I mean I’m now working on two versions simultaneously in the hope that one of them will work, and both of them have been frogged at least three times each. That kind of fun.

Looking like the start of a terribly American bikini

But that’s what happens when you refuse to look for a pattern because after 3-4 years of crocheting you should be able to do it yourself by now. Stubborn? Me? Yes.

I also got a big delivery of Christmas-coloured yarns so I’ve made a start on my very first santa hat.

I started at the point, so there were a few immature posts on Instagram

NOT a willy warmer

But now I’m getting underway it’s starting to look much more hat-like.

Again, no pattern for this one but so far I haven’t had to frog any of it!

If you follow me on Instagram, you might remember I started my first ever project on circular knitting needles. It was really fun, I like using the shorter needles, and it was going really well. I got this far:

before realising that nobody actually has a head that big. How big? I was supposed to cast on 50 stitches and I somehow managed to cast on 70.

Oops.

So that was frogged right back (I only cried a little bit) and I started again, but somehow forgot that I had switched to a smaller needle size. I got three rounds in before noticing that it would’ve been a tight fit for a baby. More frogging.

So I’m taking a break from that right now! Maybe I’ll go back when I’ve finally sorted Captain America’s shield, but we shall see.

So that’s what I’ve been doing this week. What’s everyone else working on? Got something fun to share? Let me know in the comments!

WIP Wednesday 11.10.17

I’ve made a bit of progress on the doily. I was going for a very structured pattern of 2 rounds of colour, 1 round of neutral, but just yesterday I changed my mind. I want it a bit more random than that, so I threw in 3 rounds of brown and there will be at least one other in there somewhere.

The request was for the deep red in the middle, and whatever earthy, nature-y colours I fancied. I hope it’ll look okay in the end.

My copy of Love Crochet dropped through my letterbox yesterday. I have to say, for once I’m wildly unimpressed with the freebie.

What.

But there is a pattern in the magazine for some really pretty crochet snowflakes, so I figured I’d leave the demon llama well alone and make some blue snowflakes instead. First up, a practice run with white cotton

I’ve never made snowflakes before so I don’t know if this method is standard. If it is, I’m glad I waited til my skills were a bit more advanced before having a go. I literally read the instructions through 4 times, going “all in the same stitch? All those picots, all in the same stitch?? I can’t be reading that right.” But we all know my visualisation skills are pants when it comes to crochet, so I dived in and hoped it would work out.

It was terribly fiddly, and I think my yarn is too thick, but it actually worked! I can see myself making lots of these in the coming months.

And my magic mum has done it again. After thinking about snowflakes all day, I arrived home to find that she had sent me this.

There will clearly be some snowflakes in my future!

So that’s what I’ve been doing. How’s this week going for everyone else? Working on something exciting? Let me know in the comments!
