One of my best friends recently told me she’s having a baby, so I’ve been on a bit of a making frenzy. They don’t know yet if it’s a boy or a girl, but my friend doesn’t buy into gendered colours anyway so I’ve pretty much got carte blanche and I’ve just been using anything I fancy from my stash.

There are these ginger dragon scale bootees (my friend is ginger and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a ginger baby too. They’re the cutest), which just need buttons sewing on.

I’ve started a comfort blanket, not following a pattern this time so there’s been a bit of frogging and I’m still not 100% sure how it will turn out.

It’s definitely going to be a bunny blanket. I’m currently trying to decide what colour to use for the inner ears. I could go pink or blue or yellow to match the yarn, but I’m kind of thinking a contrast would be better, maybe cream or light brown. It might be a case of just having a play and seeing what looks best.

I love this colourful cotton so much that I’ve also started a matching pair of bootees with it. Nothing photo-worthy yet though.

This is the friend for whom I made a rainbow octopom at Christmas so I’m also planning to make a mini one using the same yarn for baby.

I’d really love to make some proper baby clothes too, but it might not happen. This is my friend’s first baby so I imagine they’re going to be quite spoilt for choice, and she might not want any more clothes lying around!

The poor dragon is still in bits although I have made a start on the final wing piece.

So, even though baby isn’t due until November/December, that’s pretty much all I’ve been thinking about this week. How’s your week going? What are you working on right now? Let me know in the comments!

I’m still working on these dratted bootees. I keep thinking I’m done with one, but then I look at it the next day and it’s just not right.

Right now I’m not 100% happy with the shaping at the front, but I might just let it go.

The baby isn’t due until June so I’ve also spent a bit of time on my Tunisian jumper and the chevron blanket. This is where my sleeve is up to.

I’m on the last section, just a few more rows and I start all over again with the next sleeve!

And I’m on to the final white section of the blanket. I’ll save photos for Friday because it will be finished.

That’s what I’m working on this week, how about you? Got any thoughts on the bootees shape? Let me know in the comments!

Since realising how quickly the chevron blanket moves along, I’ve been working on it more often. I even sewed in some ends on the train back to Glasgow!

I reckon I could finish the crochet part this weekend, but I make no promises about the remaining ends.

I’ve also started a commission for some baby dragon boots. I was given this skein

And I had some lilac in my stash that just begged to be paired with it.

They’ll be newborn size so shouldn’t take me too long. As long as I can stop squeeing over how cute they are and just get on with it ūüėČ

So that’s what I’m working on this week. Has everyone got rid of the snow now? Did you have chance to wear some of your yarny makes this week? Let me know in the comments!

Birthday goodies

It was my birthday last week so I have *lots* of new presents to enjoy (I am ridiculously easy to buy for), and I thought I’d share some that will more than likely end up in my shop.

First up, I got this wee phone cosy kit from Hobbycraft

20170418_173848[1]

The yarn that came in the kit was a bit ‘sticky’, but in total it still only took me a few hours to make this up. With some other yarn these will definitely be shop stock soon.

Of course, I couldn’t just leave it simple like that and I’m already planning a dragon scale version!

I also got a copy of Simply Crochet magazine, because it came with a free Tunisian hook

The jumper pattern using the hook looks really good, and I’m looking forward to trying out some of the other patterns in there as well.

This is my first experience with a crochet magazine since I really know what I’m doing, and it is¬†vastly¬†different to¬†picking up that first magazine on a whim and wondering why it was all written in code. Ah the memories. ¬†This time I’m just excited to try all these new things, because I know just fine that I can make them.

And finally, the enormous gold-plated cherry on top:

That is 35 skeins of yarn. There’s cotton, DK, chunky, noodles, acrylic, alpaca…it would take ages to list it all. So instead I just keep taking it out and staring lovingly at it.

Isn’t it beautiful

Do you like the phone cosy? Any ideas what to make with my bumper stash? Let me know in the comments!

New stitches: fpdc, bpdc, dragon scale

There were going to be lovely photos with this post, but I have managed to break my shiny new phone after having it for a week. Well done, me. So please excuse the fuzzy rubbish photos – hopefully I’ll be able to update them with better ones soon.

***

I’ve only been crocheting for a couple of years. I’m still at the stage of learning how many new stitches I still¬†need to learn!¬† Just this year I’ve¬†discovered three new-to-me stitches:

  1. Front post double crochet (fpdc)
  2. Back post doucble crochet (bpdc)
  3. Dragon scale stitch

I have also used¬†front and back post half double crochet (fphdc and bphdc respectively) so technically I’ve learned five new stitches in just over¬†two months!

The pattern I was following used fpdc and bpdc alternately, to create a gorgeous lined texture:

I love the look of it, but I’m also quite interested in experimenting with maybe just using one or the other,¬†alternating with a regular double crochet stitch.

I also wonder if you can fp and bp into the same stitch to increase, or if that would just make a mess. There’s only one way to find out*, so keep an eye out for my experiment posts in the future

Dragon scale stitch

20170312_165449

This is fast becoming my favourite stitch of all time. How could it not be, it’s just gorgeous! I mean technically it’s called crocodile stitch. But I don’t want to be a crocodile; I want to be a dragon.

This one works by creating a row of V-stitches (double crochet, chain one, double crochet all in the same stitch), and then double crocheting 5 stitches down the first post,

20170312_165644

chain one, and 5 stitches up the second post.

20170312_165548So basically, a fancy way of using fpdc!

It took me a few goes to understand where I was supposed to put my hook and how to get the second lot of 5 to face the other way, but when I got it I just whizzed through. Dragon scale looks far more complicated than it actually is – another reason to love it!

Does anyone else have a favourite stitch? Let me know in the comments!
