Happy birthday to me (2019 edition)

It’s my birthday today and as a present to myself I have started the Changing Tides Blanket CAL hosted by Eleonora at Coastal Crochet.

The first part was released just yesterday so it’s definitely not too late to join in.

Nobody got me yarn for my birthday (!!!), and I’m still trying not to buy too much new stuff, so I’m going with whatever colours I have in my stash. I learned my lesson after the Lego blanket and I’ve made sure that all the yarn I’m using is the same thickness. From now on the pencil test is my best friend!

I’m determined this will be the CAL I actually keep up with (looking at you, Havana.) and I reckon it’s a good sign that I’ve actually started it on time.

Here are some goodies other people got me for my birthday:

Unicorn biscuit
Chocolate books
Real books

Mum and Dad also got me a ticket to a Toft workshop to make my very own Morag the higland coo amigurumi! We searched and searched for a kit, but couldn’t get hold of one for love nor money so when Mum found this workshop she jumped on it. It’s not til May though so there’s a bit of a wait before I get my Morag. I can be patient…

What’s everyone else up to this weekend? Let me know in the comments!

A present for me

This isn’t something I made, but I just had to share it! My friend at work is just as crafty as I am and she made this for my birthday party (private hire of an archery range).

It says “I don’t wear bows, I shoot ’em”, with an arrow underlining them. She was sad because the ink ran a little so it’s not as crisp as she planned, but I just love it!

Tangle of the week: Umble

This week we’re going to look at a really tangly-looking Tangle, although of course it’s simpler than it sometimes looks. You can find the tutorial here.

And here’s my step out, which is looking surprisingly dull considering I drew it in the 26 degree Australian sunshine!

I draw the inner lines and fill them in first, then if I make a mistake or go outside the lines (as I did in the top right corner) then I can just draw the auras to fit the mistakes so it looks like it’s meant to be that way!

I drew this example very square and went with the top, sides, and bottom next, but as you can see from the website example you can draw Umble lines wherever you want.

And add as many or as few layers as you want.

I stopped here, because I would stick/stamp a Happy Birthday in the space. I do like framing my sentiments with Tangles!

Umble works well with colour as well as black and white. My latest idea is to use a different colour for each layer, so it would look like rainbows separated into their different stripes.

What do you think of Umble? Would you like to see it in colour? Let me know in the comments!

FO Friday 19.01.18

I have a friend who loves dragonflies, so I made her one, using this pattern right here.

It’s not perfect, but it definitely is a dragonfly so I’ll take it! Sadly I didn’t get to see her in person before Christmas so I stuck it in the post.

This week I also finished up the virus shawl for another friend. It’s a wee bit smaller than mine, but I hope it will still be loved. I’m pretty excited about handing it over!

So that’s been my crafty week, how’s your week been? Got any FOs to share? Let me know in the comments!
