Are you annoyed?

Karen’s latest quiz is about being annoyed and oh, I could write a whole book. But for now I’ll just stick to answering the questions.

What is your biggest fault that you care to admit to?

There are so many to choose from! The one that’s bugged me most the last couple of years is that I automatically assume people aren’t interested in me and don’t want to speak to me, so I leave them alone unless they initiate a conversation. I know this makes me come across as stuck up and rude, but I just can’t seem to stop it.

Is there something you have to do that really annoys you? Maybe you would never do it again if you could?

At the moment I would say having to go to work. Being on furlough for so long, and now being unemployed, has given me a lot of time to think about it. I know there are some people who love their job and they would keep doing it regardless of pay, but the majority of us are stuck having to go to work, doing something we would really rather not, for the majority of our lives, just so we can keep living. What a rubbish system.

But also washing up. It is never EVER finished!

When it comes to your crafting, what is the thing about it that annoys you the most?

I don’t even have to think about this one – sewing in ends. I’ve spent hours or days or even months on this beautiful item and it’s finally finished!! Except it’s not, because I have to faff about with a needle and try to get the ends secure without adding big lumps or messing up the look of whatever I’ve made. Can’t stand it.

Does your significant other annoy you at times? What annoyance about them would you change?

Of course, we’re both human.

It might sound weird, but I would change the way he always defers to me. Back when I was working full days and got home pretty tired, I didn’t want to have to decide what we would eat, what to watch on TV, whether or not we would go for a walk etc. Sometimes I just want to flop down with my knitting and let things happen without having to make any decisions.

The whole Covid pandemic has been difficult. What has annoyed you the most? Is there something that others have complained about that you find is a positive?

The main thing that has annoyed me so far is the many and creative ways people have found to wear a mask wrong. I don’t know why, but the sight of a nose poking up over the top of a mask just gets under my skin.

I’m actually enjoying a few things that other people have complained about. Staying at home with the Boyfriend and my yarn is one of my favourite things. Yes, I miss my choirs very much, but other than that I am perfectly fine with staying at home away from other people.  The 2-metre rule is heaven, as feeling crowded tends to set off my anxiety. And I love wearing a face mask when I have to go shopping. I’ve always grabbed any excuse to wear a mask, or even paint my face, because I love the way it makes me feel. Almost like hiding, which feels safer for some reason. So I whip that mask on and feel like I could take on the whole supermarket if I had to.

Phew I feel better for getting that lot off my chest. Feel free to join in if you like, either with a comment or a post of your own.

Decisions, decisions

Today I have another quiz from Karen, and this one feels particularly relevant to me at the moment (read: all the time because I’m a WIP-fiend).

Are you a one project at a time crafter or do you like a variety to suit your mood?

I feel like there have been times in the dim and distant past when I was a monogamous crafter, but generally my WIP list sits between 5 and 10 projects at any one time. Partly because I both crochet and knit, but mainly because there are too many beautiful things to make and I can’t possibly stick with just one.

It does seem to work out that I usually have one large and one small project each for knitting and crochet, and then a few others sneak in when I see something I really want to make.

Do you reward yourself along the way with a new project after reaching a certain goal?

Sometimes, but only if it’s a really big/complicated project and I need a bit of extra motivation. I’m a bit too easily distracted by the new thing so it doesn’t always work…

How do you decide which project to work on? Do you require that you work on a less loved project before you work on the one that is really firing you up?

Since lockdown started I’ve only been working on projects that I feel like making (mostly socks) – there’s too much stress involved in just existing at the moment, so craft time needs to be something I enjoy.

In the before times I did used to hold exciting projects back until I’d crossed a few things off the WIP list, so maybe I’ll get back to working that way again one day.

How do you know you have too many things going at one time?

I started keeping a WIP list for just this reason. After a year or two of using it I know that once the number of projects hits double figures I’m going to start getting overwhelmed.

If you had to chose between a project that is nearly done and a new exciting one which would you pick? Are you a process crafter or a project crafter?

Well it depends. If the nearly-done project is socks then right now I would probably go for that. I’ve still not got over the I JUST MADE A PAIR OF SOCKS feeling every time I finish. Otherwise I would probably get distracted by the shiny new thing.

And there you have it. Feel free to join in if you fancy it!

A colourful quiz

Karen does the best quizzes, and this time it’s all about colour

What is your favorite colour? How is this colour reflected in your crafting?

My favourite colour is green, specifically Kelly green, which is hardly reflected in my crafting at all because green yarn usually isn’t even an option. The exception being Bonny Lass by Kitty Pride Fibres – the most beautiful yarn I have ever seen ever.

Do you prefer bright colours or more subdued shades?

Brights and jewel-tones all the way, I love colours that pop. E.g. my happy neon Hermione socks:

Does your colour mood shift with the seasons? Do you carry one colour all year and just change the accent colour?

Neither? I love the colours I love and I work with them, it doesn’t really change no matter the time of year. Although while I’m stash-busting, colour has to take a bit of a back seat as I try to just use up what I’ve got.

Is there a colour you avoid? Or maybe it’s underrepresented in your crafting?

Orange. If someone asked me to make something using orange then I could, but I would never choose it for myself.

When you pick out your crafting supplies how important is colour to you? Is it the first thing you consider or is it a bit further down the list?

It’s usually the first thing I notice, especially when it comes to yarn. That’s why my stash is so very colourful.

Do you ever consciously choose a different colour palette just for the change?

I have done in the past, but I always end up coming back to what I know and love. Lots of vivid, happy colour makes me happy so why wouldn’t I stick with that!

A gifting quiz

Ugh I knew WP wouldn’t let us keep the classic editor. I cannot work this one for toffee so my posts are going to be a mess for a while.

But the good news is hooray, it’s quiz time again! This time it’s about giving gifts.

Do you gift your handmade items?
Eventually. Unless I’m making something specifically for someone then my FOs usually sit in a box until an occasion or suitable person arises.

Do you have limits around who you gift to or what you gift?
I used to give to anyone and everyone, but now I’ll only make presents for family and very close friends. Somehow they just seem to appreciate it more.

What type of things do you like to make and gift?
I looooove giving amigurumi! Whatever someone is into there will be an ami pattern out there, and I love seeing people’s eyes light up when they see their favourite character/person/animal/snack food replicated in yarn.

Have you received handmade items?
I have a crochet blanket that I won in a raffle, and there have been many handmade cards over the years, but I can’t think of any gifts at the moment.

Have you ever asked for a gift back?
Er no. That’s not how gifts work.

Do you gift handmade items for holidays?
I have for the last few years, but I’m not sure that’s sustainable. We’ll see.

So there you have it. Feel free to join in if you want!

Quirky Q&A

Karen posted another quiz, and I’ve missed them so I’m joining in!

Do you have any quirky decorative pieces that you just love?

I’m big into fat acceptance so I have a collection of fat goddess figures that I just love. I don’t find them particularly quirky, but people do often comment on them.

There’s also this needle felted mushroom…thing that a friend got me for Christmas one year.

Do you have quirky food habits? What is the quirkiest?

I love dipping things. Fries into milkshake, crispbread and cheese into tea, crisps into peanut butter. Om nom.

Everyone has a favorite shirt. Do you have a favorite quirky piece of clothing? Maybe it’s super comfortable. Maybe it’s your favorite color.

I don’t think I do. My clothes are pretty standard. Although I must say I’m taking a while to get used to these leggings my Mum bought for me:

I’m so used to bright colours on my top half, not my legs. I love them though so there will be plenty of wearing for me to get used to it!

We all love to craft. Do you have quirkiness involved with your crafting?

I seem to be unusual in that I don’t really limit the number of WIPs I start. If I want to make something and I have the yarn then I’m going for it!

Join in if you feel like it 🙂
