Monday make

Despite having to tink and redo the final section THREE TIMES, I finished my Changing Staircases at the weekend and it’s now looking beautiful on my blocking mat.

Also slightly weird because I ran out of pins, but never mind.

I’m looking forward to wearing this baby soon. Although with it being scarf weather in Scotland right now, it might take a while to dry out.

This project taught me that I still have no concept of how knitting uses up yarn. I was sad because I thought it would have to end on a lacy section, which I didn’t want because I can just see it catching on everything. But then I got to the end of that section and still seemed to have a bit of yarn left.

I figured it was better to have a row or two of stockinette than nothing so I skipped the ‘cast off stitches’ step and knit across. Then purled. Then knit. Then purled. I was 6 rows in before realising that the yarn was going much further than I expected and I could get a-whole-nother plain section out of it. So I tinked back, cast off the stitches and did the section again.

And after all that I still had enough left to cast off, with this long a tail to sew in.

I never would have called that in a million years! It seems I need to do a LOT more knitting so I can start to get a feel for these things.

ETA: this is Changing Staircases, a free pattern by Dragon Hoard Designs on Ravelry.

WIP Wednesday 17.10.18

Current WIP count: 6

I bought some yarn from Mothy and the Squid, colourway Zombie Bloodmoth, with the intention of knitting it into a Hitchhiker for myself.

I even cast on and did about 50 rows, but for some reason I wasn’t entirely feeling it. Looking back now I know it’s because my needles were veeeery slightly too small, so the resulting fabric was stiffer than I like. I mean you couldn’t have knocked nails in with it or anything, it just didn’t have the same flowy drape of my first Hitchhiker.

Then I came across the Nautilus shawl by Orla Howard on Ravelry and the interesting shape intrigued me.

It took no time at all to frog the start of the Hitchhiker and cast on (with slightly larger needles) a Nautilus.

This is another easily memorise-able pattern that I’ve been working on while watching various films and series on my laptop, but it has one feature that I know will put off some of my knitting friends: the even numbered rows are almost entirely purl stitch.

I can already hear the groans! But I actually quite like the purl stitch, in fact I feel like I can purl faster than I can knit. Tell me I’m not the only one?

Roses for Grandma has stalled a little, as I ran out of the cream yarn. The plan is to run to Hobbycraft during my lunch break at some point this week, taking a square with me, so I can get a good match for the colour and make use of the 3 for 2 offer they’ve got on at the moment. I shall try very hard not to get distracted by all the other yarn on offer while I’m there…

So that’s what I’ve been working on! What’s everyone else up to? Got some WIPs to share? Let me know in the comments!

FO Friday 18.08.17

I’m slowly but surely knocking some entries off my WIP list!

The star garland for my sister is finished, and all packed up ready to be posted. It’s wrapped in cellophane and really difficult to photograph, so no photos I’m afraid! Hopefully there will be some when it’s hung up in its new home.

I managed to finish my tabby cat Lost In Time scarf at last.  I mean, there are a few ends that could do with sewing in, but it’s only for me so I’m counting it as done anyway.

You may remember I was hoping to finish on a popcorn row. Well the yarn ran out on the row after a popcorn row, which I was initially miffed about. But looking at the finished item I can see it’s actually perfect.

The Scottish summer being what it is, I can start wearing this immediately. It’s so comfy.

And this peculiar lump is my first attempt at the granny square gift bag:

It’s just a prototype so there are lots of mistakes and I couldn’t be bothered sewing any ends in (are you noticing a theme?), but it’s a starting point.

I can see that my idea will work, which is the most important point. Now it just needs tidying up a bit!

I feel like I’m finally getting somewhere with all my projects at last šŸ™‚

Who else has an FO to share? I’ve seen some gorgeous FOs on other people’s blogs. Any thoughts on the granny gift bag? Let me know in the comments!

May goalsĀ

Time for some progress updates I think

Screenshot_2017-05-12-09-14-43-1

I’ve done some more work on the Love Knot scarf, but the hand action I use for this stitch is causing some serious pain. I couldn’t get to sleep last night because my wrist and pointer finger were throbbing. So I’m only working on this one for 5-10 minutes at a time, and researching a moreĀ ergonomic way to make the stitch so I can hopefully minimise/stop the pain.
The flat-warming blanket is over two thirds done:

There are 3 more rows of grey, one section of dark brown, and two sections of cream to go. I’m considering doing a border of some kind, probably just something really simple like single crochet in cream. I might also picot (actually this time) the points at the top and bottom of the blanket, just to make them a bit pointier. I want it less wave-y and more chevron-y.

I’ve realised I was wildly optimistic in my goal to finish a knitted object, as I’m using pretty thin yarn, aiming for a shawl, and a very slow knitter.

So I’m changing that goal to ‘knit at least 2 rows before bed every night’. Added bonuses: the time spent knitting rather than looking at my phone/laptop helps me switch off and sleep better, and the different hand actions ease some of the pain caused by Love Knotting.

No progress at all with the pic-not baby blanket or kindle cosy, but I have finally ordered some foam mats so I can start blocking things ready to be listed in the shop.

I’ve also made a start on some more zentangle cards.

I reckon I’m right on track to meet most, if not all, of my May goals
