Sock it to me Monday 26

I’m tired of taking photos of the Hermione socks so I’m not showing them again until they’re finished. Hopefully that will just be next week, but we’ll see.

In the meantime, have a photo of my newest WIP!

These are hopefully going to be some Diagon Ally (rav link) socks for the boyfriend, this being the second skein of yarn he bought in Dunoon specifically for socks.

The twisted ribbing is new to me so that was exciting, and I might possibly maybe have a go at using the chart when it comes to the actual diagonal part. It would be good for my brain, I’m sure.

Now I’m off for a walk because there are only 10 days left of my 1 million step challenge!

Sock it to me Monday 25

Oh this heel is going to finish me off, I swear.

20200914_131342.jpg

It’s hardly changed since last week, thanks to the saga.

First, while trying to admire my handiwork with the heel flap I noticed that a few rows back there were some purl stitches right in the middle. Apparently counting to two was just too much for me and I’d turned the work after only finishing one needle.

Second, in the process of tinking back to fix that problem I realised there was one needle of 18 stitches and one of only 17. I went back a few more rows and the count wasn’t fixing itself, so I stuck in a lifeline and frogged the whole heel flap.

Yes, there were only 17 stitches all the way down. No, I don’t know how it happened or how I didn’t notice for an entire heel flap.

Thankfully it then went smooth as silk.

But third, the heel turn. I’m now on my fourth attempt. I can’t even remember all the ways I’ve messed it up, but believe me when I say I am never ever EVER using this heel pattern again.

Please keep your fingers crossed/send prayers/good vibes/whatever you do my way that this time I can get the stupid thing right!

August review 2020

I got in a muddle with my cotton yarn so had a shuffle around with Excel, and I’m not quite sure how but the total stash used this year went way up while the stash remaining stayed roughly the same. I guess I’ll only find out if it’s right when I get to the bottom of stash mountain (AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA).

Stash used this month: 1

Total stash used this year: 41.25

Stash remaining: 326.75

I’m not really sure why I didn’t get much crafting done last month. But one skein is better than no skeins so I’ll take it! It was almost entirely socks this month, with a blanket border thrown in for good measure.

Hopefully this month I can get a bit more of a wriggle on and bust that stash. I might yet make another blanket, this time with warmer colours, but we’ll see what happens with work.

Sock it to me Monday 23

Please excuse the hasty photos – I completely forgot today is Monday!

The boyfriend’s socks only need a toe and the ends sewing in to be finished.

20200831_185808.jpg

Hermione’s every day socks are bimbling along down the first foot.

20200831_185904.jpg

How I wish I had gone for a plain foot instead of carrying on the fiddly pattern all the way down, so I could have been done and onto the second sock by now. Oh well, you live and learn!

I’m pretty excited to get my socks finished because I have PLANS for the leftovers. I already think I’m going to love them, but we’ll see. Now, on with the current socks.

Sock it to me Monday 22

I’m kind of liking having two pairs of socks to work on at the same time, especially as one is simpler than the other. If I want a little bit of brain work, I knit my neon rainbow socks.

20200824_122845.jpg

And if I want to just zone out while watching the new episodes of Lucifer (eeeeeh!!) then I can work on the boyfriend’s socks.

20200824_122723.jpg

It’s perfect! Y’know aside from the ridiculously long DPNs I’m having to use for the rainbow socks, but you can’t have everything.

Oh, snap.

Last post I showed you my sock progress. Two or three rows later, this happened.

A snapped circular sock needle

Disaster!

Luckily, I got it down onto the table without dropping any stitches so there was no frogging or fixing required. Unluckily, I don’t have any other empty sock needles in my collection so now I’m having to use these ridiculous things:

20200823_174904.jpg

You wouldn’t believe the number of times I’ve stabbed myself or the boyfriend or cushions that are anywhere near me when I’m knitting. But I didn’t have to undo all that fiddly work and the sock is progressing so overall I’m calling it a win.

I don’t think I’ll bother with circular sock needles again.

Walking WIP Thursday

Current WIP count: 7

Man I wish I’d got this written for yesterday. You can never have too much alliteration!

I don’t think I’ve mentioned before that I’m doing a sponsored walking challenge to raise money for Diabetes UK – the aim is to walk one million steps between July 1st and September 30th. This averages out to 10,870 steps per day, which at my pace takes just under two hours.

You wouldn’t think two hours could have that much impact on my day, especially considering I’m still furloughed, but for various reasons it’s really cutting into my crafting time.

So the only logical solution is to knit while I’m walking, isn’t it!

No action shot, as it’s really hard to walk and knit and take a photo at the same time, but here’s a progress shot instead.

20200820_125746.jpg

Today I managed to knit 6 rows on my socks without walking into any lamp posts/bins/other people – success!

Sock it to me Monday 21

I was knitting away on the boyfriend’s socks when I realised there was a little sock circular sitting around with nothing on it.  A little while later I was browsing my stash on Excel and noticed that I’d never actually used my Neon Rainbow yarn from Siobhan’s Crafts. You can guess what happened next.

20200817_124741.jpg

This is the start of some Hermione’s Everyday Socks (Ravelry link) for myself.  I must say, so far I’m not convinced with this pattern – it seems a lot of faff for just a little pretty. But maybe that’s just because I don’t like having to switch between knit and purl stitches. I’m going to carry on and just trust that in the end it will be worth it.

The boyfriend’s socks are plodding along and I’ve almost finished the first one.

With two pairs now on the go at the same time, I think I can officially call myself a sock knitter.

FO Friday 14/08/20

You bet I waited til the depths of Summer to finish off a blanket!

20200814_171718.jpg

Despite the oodles of natural light, I cannot seem to get a true picture of the colours, but trust me when I say it’s BEAUTIFUL.

This is a Beachcombing blanket designed by Eleonora at Coastal Crochet. I decided to do it as a stash buster and it didn’t half make a dent in the mountain! According to Excel this beauty used up 17.5 skeins of cotton, which had been sitting in my stash since 2017. That feels gooooood.

Now back to socks again so I can play with my yarn without sweating buckets.

July review 2020

Oops I just realised I haven’t done a yarn stash update for last month yet. Better get on with it!

Stash used this month: 1.25

Total stash used this year: 36

Stash additions: 2 or 4 (do I count the yarn the boyfriend bought for his socks? I can’t decide)

Stash remaining: 325.75 (or 327.75)

I spent so much time darning socks last month that I hardly got through any stash. But that doesn’t seem so bad when I look at the pile of socks I can now wear again.

I did finish one pair of shortie socks and made a good start on another, which is where the tiny bit of yarn was used up.

All of my factory-made socks are fixed now so this month I can get back to knitting, crocheting, and busting some stash!

Sock it to me Monday 20

The shortie socks ended up not quite matching, as I suspected.

20200810_154526.jpg

I would really rather have got a matching pair out of it, but I’m not too disappointed – I can’t remember the last time I used every last scrap of a skein!

The yarn was Lilac Blossom sock from JK Fibers and I got a long pair of socks and these shorties out of one skein, which is more than I expected. I wonder where I got the idea that one skein is just enough for one pair of socks?

Right now I’m working on a second pair for the boyfriend, using the yarn he bought in Dunoon. So far it’s turning out much more green and less purple than it looked in the skein.

20200810_154607.jpg

These will be basic socks (Ravelry link) again, and then for the next pair I’m going to try a new-to-me pattern. Probably Hermione’s every day socks, but we’ll see.

WIP Wednesday 05.08.20

Current WIP count: 7

Yes I’m one WIP down, but that’s because I frogged rather than finished something.20190410_091721-1.jpg

The Havana blanket has been sitting in a box for over a year, and I realised the thought of working on it wasn’t bringing me any joy, so I frogged it.
I’m actually quite relieved now it’s gone. Maybe I’ll try again one day if I find the right yarn.

I’m also chugging along with my socks. Apologies for the photo quality – it’s miserable weather in Scotlandia today.

20200805_165314.jpg
I sort of wish I’d gone for a contrasting heel as well, especially looking at the amount of main yarn I have left.
20200805_165747.jpg
So these may end up as not-quite-matching socks in the end. That’s okay though; they’re only for me and hardly anyone will see the toes whether they match or not. I can’t wait to get these done and make a start on another pair for The boyfriend.
