FO Friday 04.01.19

It’s been a while (and also Christmas) so there’s quite a few FOs to share today.

I’ll start with my tastiest gift; a Baileys baked cheesecake.

My friend is awesome and let me have a piece, and it was goooood if I do say so myself. Which is a huge relief, as I’ve never made a baked cheesecake before so there was always the possibility that it would be rubbish.

I finished up the ‘matching’ cushions for my parents. A robin for my mum

And a hedgehog for my dad.

Here’s the back before I attached it:

My sister got a pair of modified frostvirka mittens, this time as fingerless gloves

I used chunky yarn so not only were they quicker than the last pair, there were also fewer ends to sew in. Win!

And finally, to finish off the Sunrise Scarf I had to tag in a wee bit of my previous Twirl. It’s kind of a sudden jump in colour compared to the rest, but I think it just about works.

Not quite as many presents as I was hoping to make for Christmas, but considering how quickly the year ran past and the fact that I spent December facing redundancy it’s really not a bad show. How’s your new year going so far? Got any new FOs to share? Let me know in the comments!

WIP Thursday 13.12.18

Current WIP count: 5

Hoo what a week. Wednesday totally passed me by!

I got back on the horse with the Sunrise Scarf and now it’s past the point I reached before having to undo the whole thing.

But it’s taking foreverrrrr so I might end up not using the whole Twirl, especially as there are only 11 knitting days left before Christmas.

There have also been many African flowers. I’ve now perfected making them while walking so I can get my lunchtime walk in and still make some progress!

What’s everyone else working on this week? Let me know in the comments!

There was a bit of a setback with my Sunrise Scarf. You may remember it looked like this last week.

And now there is nothing.

I went a bit wrong you see and I tried my best to tink it, but somehow I got the stitches twisted. Then I thought I could frog a bit, pick up the stitches again, and carry on, but once I started I couldn’t seem to find the right point to pick up again. So I ended up having to frog the lot and start again.

Sigh.

One of my other Christmas presents is going much better. I’m making a heidi bear triceratops for my friend’s son, and now I’ve got the pattern memorised I’ve been whacking out African flowers every spare minute I get. Including on my lunchtime walk!

I’ve made all the singular shapes and now I have to make many, many pentagons and hexagons.

This is 13 out of the 50 required motifs so there’s a ways to go yet, but I’m enjoying every minute!

That’s what I’ve been doing, what’s everyone else working on? Let me know in the comments!

WIP clear out

Starting WIP count: 7

Having decided it would be good to go into 2019 with as clear a WIP list as possible, I had a good hard look at the list and made some decisions.

WIP 1: lacy scarf

IMG_20170309_173723_579

This has been sitting in my WIP drawer for several months. And by several months I mean over a year. I’m clearly not feeling it, so I frogged the whole thing and caked the yarn so it’s ready for a more enthusing project.

WIP 2: Knitted blanket

This has also been lying around for months (although not as long as the scarf) waiting for me to add a third colour. But, being realistic, it’s a charity blanket for cats; they don’t care how many colours it has. So I cast off and packaged it up ready to go to the cat shelter this weekend.

WIP 3: Roses for Grandma.

This one stays. I’ve collected everything into one project bag so I have a better idea of my progress and I don’t have to hunt around for the right yarn every time I come back to it.

WIP 4: Furls crochet-along skirt

I’m still dithering over this one, it may yet be frogged and abandoned. It just takes so many tiny stitches to get around my hips!

WIP 5: Mittens

These should be finished by tomorrow so I can cross them off too.

WIP 6: Sunrise Scarf

This one’s a Christmas present so will be finished before 2019 rolls around.

WIP 7: dragon

My dragon is now a drake. I gave up on the wings and stuffed the parts so now it just needs sewing together.

Final WIP count by new year: 2 (possibly 1 if I bin the skirt).

That’s a clean enough slate for me! Of course I’m making a few Christmas presents this year so the count will go up again before it comes down, but I’m confident that I can slide into 2019 with only a couple of projects on the go.

Which will leave me with tons of space on the WIP list to start exciting new projects! Hooray!

WIP Wednesday 28.11.18

Current WIP count: 7

While the mittens are sitting in the naughty corner, I’ve started working on another Christmas present using one of my Twirls. I figured I’d better get stash-busting in case Mum gets me another big box of yarn for Christmas.

This is a free pattern from Hobbii called the Sunrise Scarf, which is designed specifically for Twirls. But of course I’m not sticking to it entirely! First of all the pattern calls for 4.5mm needles, but I wanted it more light and airy so I went for 6mm.

I also got a bit bored at the thought of repeating the pattern forever more so after five repeats I added in a stripe of stockinette to break it up.

Now I just need to remember to add that stripe after every fifth repeat so it looks deliberate and I don’t have to tink or frog anything.

That’s all I’ve been working on yarn-wise (not counting the multiple fails with the second mitten), but I’ve also been plotting and planning. I really do want to knock a bit out of my stash in December, and it would be great to go into the new year with a fairly clear WIP list, so I’m busy working out several ways to make that happen. Watch this space.

So there’s my week, what’s everyone else working on? Any exciting Christmas makes underway? Let me know in the comments!
