White rabbits!

Current WIP count: 6

I am a dingbat sometimes. I reached the end of the foot on my Siobhan’s Crafts sock on Monday; toes are easy enough to knit and sing at the same time so I carried on. Turns out, no. Instead of paying attention to the scrap yarn that will be removed to add in a heel, I just started making a toe at the beginning of the round like I usually do, and now the heel would be on the side of the foot.

Time to frog.

My sister is learning to crochet and she sent me photos of her first ever granny square attempt. The bug must be catching because the next day I just had to grab my crochet hook and start making some granny squares myself.

I only have one cake of this mysterious yarn so it’s going to be a very small doll/kitty blanket, but I like the way it’s looking and it means one less skein in stash mountain.

FO Friday 30.03.18

Happy good Friday everyone!

My scrappy blanket was so addictive that I’ve finished it already, sewn in ends and all.

It did help that I only had 4 ends to sew in: start and finish of the main blanket, plus start and finish of the border.

I use the fisherman’s knot to join my yarn together, so there were no ends to sew for the colour changes.

The border is nice and simple, just two rows of granny stitch in white to balance out all the colours in the main part.

So that’s it finished and ready to go for charity, in less than a week. Don’t you just love grannies?

Now I’m going to spend the rest of the day watching Moana and having a spring clean. Living the life! What’s everyone else been working on? Got any fun plans for this weekend? Let me know in the comments!

FO Friday 02.02.18

I don’t seem to have very many FOs at the moment, not sure why.

All I have to offer this week is my second granny square for Yarn4Less

20180202_072606-1.jpg

Apologies for the photo quality, I spent 15 minutes trying to get a decent one and it just wasn’t happening!

This square is made up of 2 rows regular dc alternated with 2 rows fp/bpdc, which makes a pattern far more interesting than I can get my camera to show.

Just trust me, it’s amazing 😉

So they’re on their way to be added to the big blanket. I can’t wait to see the end result.

I’m feeling sad today, I was with one of my best friends last night when he got some awful, awful news. So I’m going to curl up under my duvet and not move unless I absolutely have to, and hopefully that will help.  Then next time I see the people I love I’m going to hug them extra tight, especially my friend.

How’s everyone’s week been? Got any FOs to share? Let me know in the comments (and then go hug someone).

FO Friday 26.01.18

On Instagram I follow a giveaway account called Yarn4Less. Obviously I signed up originally for the free stuff, but since then I’ve learned what a lovely community it is.

Not only are the people super friendly and supportive of each other, we also use our crafting skills for activism and charity. Right now everyone is making granny squares, to create a blanket for victims of domestic abuse.

Here is my first square:

Of course I’m not just making a regular granny square, that would be far too easy and I love front post/back post stitches too much!

I’m also going to make a second square with alternating rows of regular stitches and fp/bp like this one. I think it’ll make an even more interesting texture.

Then I will get right back to crossing things off my WIP list, honest!

How’s your week been? Finished anything crafty? Let me know in the comments!

FO Friday 06.10.17 (nearly)

As soon as you think you’ve got this scheduling thing figured out, along comes WordPress to prove you wrong!

Better late than never, here is my FO Friday post.

Only one FO this week, and you’ll have to excuse the photos as I’m both model and photographer and my arms are not quite long enough!

I finally finished up my scoodie and I’m loving it.

Blocking did straighten out the scarf part a very little, but in future I think I’ll just avoid the granny joining stitch and go for something straighter.

I particularly like the fit of the hood

Usually they barely fit over my head and keep sliding back so my ears are exposed (I must have a big noggin!) but this one has more than enough room.

I’d want something a bit brighter for myself, so this is going into the shop just as soon as my mannequin head arrives so I can get some decent photos. This thing does not look good flat.

Not quite as productive as last week, but then I have been taking my iron tablets and feeling quite a bit better.

What do you think of the scoodie? Anyone else got some FOs to share? Let me know in the comments!

WIP Wednesday 20.09.17

Current WIP count: 9

Squirtle was getting lonely, so I’ve started making a charmander friend for him. I haven’t had a solid chunk of time to work on it so this one is going a bit slower.

The hood for my scoodie is blocking right now, I tried spraying it with water rather than soaking so hopefully it won’t take as long to dry as the little squares did.

I’ve joined the squares together into a scarf, but there’s a very real possibility I might undo them all again. It’s not a straight join and I really don’t like the way it makes the scarf zigzag (sorry no photos, I dislike it that much).

I really don’t enjoy the whole joining process though, so I’ll probably just do another round of granny stitch all the way around the edge and hope that straightens it up a bit.

And the beautiful second Seafoam Scarf is nearly finished.

It’s long enough to wrap around my neck now, so I’ll just add a few more repeats until the yarn runs out. I can’t be doing with tiny little bundles of yarn left over after every project!

What’s everyone else working on this week? Let me know in the comments!

I’m making super progress on my Seafoam Scarf, sooooo glad I dropped Sacre Coeur for this!

Still dithering about how long to make it. If I carry on until the yarn is all gone then I think it’ll end up massively long, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Or I could make it a more regular length and find some other use for the remaining yarn. I’m really not sure.

There’s also a solid beginning on the first bit of my brother’s Christmas present:

The blue is actually nowhere near this dark

Can you tell what it is yet?

I’m using 53Stitches’ pattern and hoping mine turns out even half as cute. I’m still an amigurumi novice so I’m not expecting it to be perfect, but if it’s recognisably a squirtle then I’ll be happy!

All the small granny squares for my scoodie are blocking, and I’ve made a start on the big square for the hood. This involves adding stitches to only 3 of the 4 sides, which I’ve not done before. Yay for new skills!

What’s everyone else working on? Made a start on any Christmas presents yet? Let me know in the comments!

Things I’m Working On Thursday

Yeah I totally missed WIP Wednesday, so here’s a Things I’m Working On Thursday to make up for it!

Current WIP count: 8

A bit of back story: my salsa friends bought me 3 skeins of sock yarn from Hand Drawn Yarn for my birthday. They are utterly gorgeous, and precious because they’re from my friends, so I wanted to do something special with them.  I decided to use one for my first knitting project since my Nan taught me when I was little; the beautiful Sacre Coeur shawl  by Nim Teasdale

sacre_coeur2_small2

Looking at it now, I’m really not sure why I thought I could do it when I’ve only ever knitted straight scarves in garter stitch, and that was almost 20 years ago.  It was painfully slow, quite stressful, and not at all what I envisioned for using this lovely yarn.

Then I saw this post about the Seafoam Scarf on I Am Branching Out, and it was love at first sight.  I think it looks utterly perfect in that yarn, but my Hand Drawn yarn is so gorgeous I figured it could look just as good.

So without further ado, this is what I have so far:

If knitting works like crochet then I think I’m using needles that are slightly too large, which is why it’s so airy and delicate-looking. But I quite like that look so I’m carrying on with it.

I love this pattern so much, and it’s far easier than I thought it would be. When this one’s finished I might have another go with either thicker yarn or thinner needles.

I’ve also made a start on a granny square scoodie from Kristabella’s Hodgepodge, using up some of the 1kg of Bernat Premium yarn I accidentally ordered. Check the skein size before you order, people. Seriously.

So that’s what I’m working on this week! What’s everyone else up to? Got any yarn-ordering stories (please tell me I’m not the only one)? Let me know in the comments!

FO Friday 18.08.17

I’m slowly but surely knocking some entries off my WIP list!

The star garland for my sister is finished, and all packed up ready to be posted. It’s wrapped in cellophane and really difficult to photograph, so no photos I’m afraid! Hopefully there will be some when it’s hung up in its new home.

I managed to finish my tabby cat Lost In Time scarf at last.  I mean, there are a few ends that could do with sewing in, but it’s only for me so I’m counting it as done anyway.

You may remember I was hoping to finish on a popcorn row. Well the yarn ran out on the row after a popcorn row, which I was initially miffed about. But looking at the finished item I can see it’s actually perfect.

The Scottish summer being what it is, I can start wearing this immediately. It’s so comfy.

And this peculiar lump is my first attempt at the granny square gift bag:

It’s just a prototype so there are lots of mistakes and I couldn’t be bothered sewing any ends in (are you noticing a theme?), but it’s a starting point.

I can see that my idea will work, which is the most important point. Now it just needs tidying up a bit!

I feel like I’m finally getting somewhere with all my projects at last 🙂

Who else has an FO to share? I’ve seen some gorgeous FOs on other people’s blogs. Any thoughts on the granny gift bag? Let me know in the comments!

I managed to untangle the massive yarn knot, hooray!

And I only had to take my scissors to it once when I realised that I’d somehow pulled the other end into the knot, so no matter which way I pulled I was always tightening it in one direction or the other.

20170816_181528-1

I make no comment on whether this will be ready for Friday or not.

I’ve also been working on an idea I had a few weeks ago. You can’t tell yet, but it’s going to be a granny square basket!

It will just be a small thing even though I’m using chunky yarn. I imagine it being used as a little gift bag, for a candle maybe, or some chocolates.

And this is the star garland blocking away!

That’s all the progress I have for this week. What’s everyone else been working on? Let me know in the comments!
